| One would argue that the primary distinction between people and animals is this; people have the ability to innovate and move beyond instinct. Animals do not. Ergo, a furry is a person, with prominent traits that may or may not mimic a single or multiple species of animals, and are not inherently alien to Earth (aliens aren't furries, guys, nor are elves or goblins or harpies or what have you, OR THE NA'VI FOR CHRISSAKE; those are extremely similar but technically distinct fetish areas). Furries reason, in a way familiar to humanity (even a way essentially human, if one so chooses), and display characteristically human traits (except possibly tool use or clothing, as convenience dictates) in addition to those of a given animal - and not necessarily, indeed probably not, physical traits. It is a question of the mind.
I feel like I just repeated what everyone else has said. The distinction, I've always found, is pretty intuitive. Still let's try something else: If it can't give you consent in a language you are theoretically capable of understanding, it's an animal. If it can say "Oh, yes, please don't stop," it's a furry.
And I'm sorry to bring sex into it again. I feel like such a one-trick pony. But that's really how it's always made the most sense to me.

| I sort of agree with GoldenDemon, but theres one thing he's missing.
Animals and furries DO have a distinct difference that makes them both completely differnt. Sex.
Animals have no conscious - they do what they were mad to do, breed, hibernate, breed some more, groom, breed.
Furries, on the other hand, have developed the human knowledge of the broader vision of life. Not everything's about sexuality. Even though a lot of things play into the part of it, the line that seperates the two begins with knowledge and understanding of there's more to life.

| A much better way to phrase it, I do say. You've nicely codified the abstract principle there, MeowingFox. I stand impressed. | |

| Dolphins are people, dude, to my way of thinking. They mate for pleasure (the only species other than humans to do so), and they learn and innovate - so not only do they game the system of physical laws and objects, but they have learned to take advantage of their own internal processes for disproportionate rewards as well. Primitive people, to be sure, and probably less capable in many ways than humans, but still people. | |

| all animals get pleasure out of mating, some just mate for fun and not offspring. dogs for example, masturbate, so do monkeys. | |
